The Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU) Adult ESL Program offers free English classes to any non-native speaker of English.

We emphasize speaking, listening, writing and survival skills, that students use daily while living in the United States. Beginner, intermediate and advanced level classes are offered. Instruction takes place in classes and in tutoring sessions.

The program enrolls more than 1,200 adults of all ages, from more than 50 countries. Some students plan to stay in the United States permenantly and others are here only temporarily, either to visit or for business purposes. Educational backgrounds vary from no formal schooling to advanced degrees. All students enjoy the social activities as well as the educational opportunities the program provides.

Our Mission: The Allegheny Intermediate Unit is an educational service agency supporting schools, families, and communities. We model and promote effective research-based practices in teaching and learning. Through partnerships and collaborative leadership, we provide instruction and services which meet the needs of our diverse community of learners.
